The critics hated it, and it opened to what were described as “the worst notices since Judas Iscariot”. In spite of universal damnation, the show caught on with the public, and went on to run for over 2,000 triumphant performances. Except for holiday cover, when Evelyn Laye took over temporarily, Anna Neagle stayed with the show throughout its long run.
